Indecisiveness

I wasn't aware until yesterday that difficulty with making decisions was a reasonably common aspect of life for autistic people. I'd never bothered to examine why I have such difficulties, perhaps because they've been a feature of my life for so long. And the problem isn't only focused on important decisions - for instance, if I'm going to a shop, I spend the entire journey fretting over choosing to buy oranges or tomatoes; a trivial decision hardly loaded with unforeseeable, dire consequences that make me wary in advance. After I had an advice session recently, I had to write to the professionals, asking them to make a decision for me about my attending/not attending a future session. It must have seemed bizarre to them.

Any advice or anecdotes about personal experiences of indecisiveness would be welcomed by me. Slight smile

  • I’ve always had this problem. My mother picked up on it when younger and would have me sort what I was wearing the night before (American schools- no uniform SADLY)

I found envisioning a thing really helpful. Planning ahead is about engaging the imagination and identifying what’s needed. Then I just have to always tell myself to Stick to the Plan.
