Clothes too many ???

I like clothes and have my own style, problem is I live in a studio flat it is small.

I have my wardrobe full of clothes hanging up, then I have a set of three plastic drawers full too (not very big TBH) and I have underbed drawers with clothes, and a tall boy drawer set with clothes in it, I have two big laundry bags behind the tall boy with clothes in it, and at the bottom of the wardrobe I have a storage box with yup clothes. and another laundry bag.

Anyone in the same boat and thinking, would it not be nice for more space and less clothes, but feel attached to my nice clothes.

I mean some girls have a walk in closet, and if I had a cupboard size storage I could easily put them in there. But I don't  have that room.

I dont do trousers and have about 30 skirts, 20 dresses, 60/70 tops, some leggins, I maybe have about 20 shoes (but can happily have 7 pairs not as fussed with shoes).

I have a few knitwares too. my workout clothes are just two tee shirts and two bottoms and two socks not anything else.

i sometimes feel I should be able to have less, like all the stuff hanging in wardrobe and in drawers but no the laundry bags and boxes stuffed with clothes.

eeeek!!!

I feel if I let them go I would not afford to replace them

I feel it has gotten out of hand, I am not buying any more but dont know what to do, if I should give some away/sell or just keep but then it is sort of taking over my space, and I feel like a little bit cluttered in home.

  • I think if you wear them all, or at least have some occasion on which you would wear them, then it is fine to keep them. I have had that problem and I am not even that into clothes as such (I often wear the same favourites). Mine came about more through the "nearly but not quite" problem, so many of them were nearly right but not quite, so I like the thing enough to think I would wear it but then every time I might wear it I end up choosing something else instead because there was something wrong, too tight somewhere or too low cut or something. I did end up giving a lot to charity shops, but I do still have too many! I ought to do another purge.

Since covid there are loads I don't wear any more because of not going places much. I don't put on "proper" clothes just around the house and mostly just go out to cycle. But surely that will change eventually? I can't be a hermit forever!

Some clothes I do just hang onto for memories, especially if the thing is too tatty to give to charity. Only you can really judge if you wear them enough to keep all of them, or if you actually like them all equally. But maybe don't get too hung up on what you "should" have. You aren't buying more so your collection is not growing out of hand. We can have a tendency to get attached to things, so if you do like all of them and the feelings you get from the are positive then keep them. If they are making you feel more stressed and you genuinely want more space then try and sort through them and see how you feel.

I have tried putting things I am considering passing on into a bag or box for a week or two. If I then change my mind about any of them I can get them out before it is too late.

Are your concerns about not being able to afford more genuine or are you catastrophizing? There are sometimes great finds in charity shops if go often, but in another post you said you are shielding so presumably not going in shops. You can also buy second hand or vintage clothes on ebay and get a bargain (I used to have an addiction to buying Victorian clothes there... now I have far too many ancient clothes that i can't even wear and belong in a museum!) Or learn to sew and make your own, this solved my problem of the never quite right clothes I had too many of!

  • ps I love vintage , I love the 1950s styles. Victorian is amazing too, but 1950's some 40's is my thing.
