Christmas madness

I really dont understand the point of Christmas shopping. Why does everyone go out and spend loads of money they probably dont have on useless stuff that other people probably dont even want? I went to the shopping centre yesterday expecting my usual quiet Monday there looking at my bookshop and instead it was masses and masses of people charging round everywhere. I got barged and my foot got stepped on. I could hear a conversation on someones phone discussing what presents to buy and it seemed obvious that he was buying stuff he knew people wouldnt want just for the sake of it. Why? As someone who rarely understands human behaviour I really dont see the point of any of it

Its left me scared to leave the house now until Christmas is over

  • It’s when you receive the useless gift and then have to try and workout what response they want that is acceptable, when really all I’m thinking is, “this is going to the charity shop on Monday.” I occasionally get asked, what I want for Christmas, the answer is always, “ nothing “. If there is something I really want, I have it because I’ve researched it for days and got exactly what I wanted. I’m not a Grinch, it’s the same on birthdays, I don’t understand some random item that’s being forced on me. Merry Christmas all!

  • Exactly it's so wasteful and pointless.

A few years ago Martin Lewis launched a campaign to stop unnecessary present buying. Since then he repeats the message every Christmas on his website and TV shows. Hopefully if it gets repeated enough more people will take it on board and think before they buy. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2022/11/martin-lewis-christmas-gifts-help-or-hindrance/ Best quote from his message "we do tit-for-tat giving, which means people end up with tat".

Thankfully I don't have that problem.
