History

One of my special interests is history and I just wondered if anyone else is into it, in particular if anyone is interested in any of the areas of history that I am into.

The Cold War is my real interest, anything to do with the history of the Communist bloc, not so much Russia, more Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania etc. My biggest one though is the GDR (East Germany) and anything to do with history and life in the GDR. I think it comes from the fact that my uncle travelled there a lot and he used to tell me stories about it growing up. I am interested in German history in general as well, especailly the history of German football and culture which is a real special interest of mine

The other area I am really interested in is South American history, particulary the history of Argentina. I am facinated by Juan and Eva Peron, I think Evita was a really interesting person, so unique and passionate about helping people.

I also love football and love learning the history of a country through their football teams, I think football in other cultures says so much about the country and its a way that I love to learn about it

If anyone else is interested in any of these things Id really love to chat to you

  • A really good book you might like is The 10 Football Matches that changed history. It particulary includes the 1954 World Cup final between Hungary and West Germany. At the time the Hungarians were the greatest team in the World and West Germany completely unfancied and still recovering from WW2. It argues that the result shaped European history and what happened next. The German win and the outpouring of joy and confidence in the new country helped kickstart the economic miracle that led to Germany becoming a powerhouse of Europe and the outpouring of anger and grief on the streets of Budapest slowly turned to protests against the communist government and sowed the seeds of the Hungarian uprising of 1956.

  • I've just finished a biography on Bess of Hardwick who lived the same time as Queen Elizabeth I.  Fascinating stuff !

  • Massivley into history, but only modern-ish history , American civil war onwards. Particular aviation history, written a couple of short run local history books about my local airport. That involved many visits to the archives over several years. That apart always been fascinated by some of the niche parts of history. Like the phoney war 1939-40, the second half of 1945 and what happened in Europe, the fal of the Berlin Wall ( as I remember it) and in general the 1945-60 period. I also love football and have a couple of good books , one on football during the wars and another on football up to 1914.  Also spend hours on youtube, watched every Mark felton video atleast once.

  • My fav parts of history is the Victorian, Romans and WW1 - WW2 and I always found the Titanic pretty interesting too.

  • I can help you with questions about Poland. I was born at the end of communism. When actual changes begin.
