How my autism feels like AI art

Recently I've been enjoying looking at pictures of AI art gone wrong on the internet, and it's all wonderfully weird and bizarre.  And it started me thinking about how it could be a metaphor for my autistic experience.

Some pictures seem quite normal at first glance.  Two girls holding hands on the beech, or a giant r2d2 and some guys, or Thor having lunch in a cafe.  But then you look closer, and notice the differences.  The way the clothes hang in impossible ways.  The proportions of the face are unusual.  So many fingers all tangled together.

It's like the AI just doesn’t have quite enough information to make it all it all work.  It's like masking, giving an appearance of "normal" but actually being something totally unique.  And that can be wonderful, but it can also be strangely upsetting for some people who think normal is best and deviation is uncanny.

  • Your analogy is so interesting. That feeling of "uncanny" i get a lot in myself. The pictures are hilarious.  Very Salvador Dali-esque. AI doesn't have intuition but has to work off a set of rules which, judging by the picures, isn't always followed. But then in art created by humans, there aren't really any rules. But there kind of are so we can get a representation of something. But AI has to follow rules in order to produce something coherent. Like when interacting with non autistic people we are expected to follow the rules. And even when we do we get it wrong! I have got a point somewhere in that but im not sure if ive explained well. I'm not saying autistic people are robots though!!

  • I get it- the comparison between doing things intuitively and working them out logically by applying the rules we've had to learn.  It's hard work!

  • It is! And sometimes it goes a bit wrong!
