I'm being referred for an autism assessment.

Following up my previous post. I've just had my appointment with my GP. He was happy to put in a referral he said it is a long wait, but I should get a letter next year.  
I think he said the next thing I'll hear is an appointment with psychologist/psychiatrist? is that right or did I miss understand him.
Was just so relieved I think I zoned out, and started talking about my loop ear plugs.

  • That sounds about right Simon. Not saying this will be exactly how it works for you, but the next stage for me, after GP visit, was an appointment with my local mental health trust. That went into far more detail about how I behaved, why I felt I might be autistic, etc. It may have lasted an hour or something like that. Then there was enough there for me to be referred to specialist assessors, who conducted my formal assessment and gave me my diagnosis. End to end the process took about three or four years, but that was during the Covid era, and it will be different in different parts of the country. That may feel a bit demoralising, but to be honest it was helpful to me as it allowed me to come to terms with what I was increasingly sure would be a diagnosis (and was).
