Meeting management in regards to reasonable adjustments

After been recently diagnosed with autism and informing my employer, HR insisted any such request it went to occupational health before anything else. My management have read my report with some redacted statements(personal information) to try and get a clearer picture of what difficulties I face. 

anyway occupational health were worse than useless, I work in early years and a main issue is communicating with parents that I am not comfortable with, and was basically told to suck it up and get on with it as it’s part of the job no help whatsoever. I struggle quite a lot when routines change amongst other things again told this was part of the job  

basically what I’m asking has anyone ever had any issues in regards to reasonable adjustments where can I get suggestions even so I can pass it on to the , I love the job I do but I am struggling and feel that if I have the support then I can be on the same level playing field as the rest of the staff team

  • You know yourself best, have you given suggestions yourself of how they can better support you with communication and also about what you think is adequate notice of routine changes? Are they changing ways of working or moving people to different rooms or children without giving notice? There will be some changes which unfortunately can’t be given prior notice like sickness etc. My husband has had meetings about adjustments before but the word reasonable does work both ways which has ended up throwing him a bit. It can work out being more of a compromise depending on what the issues are and where the employer’s overall responsibility lies (eg. As a clinical hospital worker my employer can’t agree to any adjustment for me which may compromise patient safety) If you belong to a union they can send advocates to the meetings with you, some people or charities also run their own advocacy services might be worth looking into
