Changing Jobs

I have done my job for many years and have reached 60. I have known for a while that there is due to be a reduction of staff in one area, not mine. They have replaced staff leaving with temps., So the team is a lot smaller. I understood that some people may change roles where less are needed. However this week were told that they are looking at how to restructure and gave us the timetable which includes consultation in 6 months. I have now realised that although the need for the job I do will not change and may increase, I may have to apply for a post.

I thought I would search to see what jobs are around locally should I need to look in 6 months. As I did this I realised I don't think I would now be able to attempt a new job with all the challenges of new skills. I am now comfortable working mostly from home and can't imagine walking into a new place and starting again. I am not sure I would get through an interview anyway.

Does anyone else have experience of changing jobs at a similar age?

  • I should add, changing employer into a similar job role isn't that big a deal. A few weeks in and you'll be back up and running, I'd say don't underestimate yourself as a professional, not just an employee of your exiting firm. Your skills will be transferrable of that I am sure
