Autistic and on remand in Parc Prison

My son 20 yrs old and has autism.

He is on remand in Parc Prison.  I have asked for reasonable adjustments to be made for him and they have done nothing for him .   As he is autistic he has aversion to certain foods , he cant eat them.  Parc prison has a facility called the canteen on a computer terminal where prisoners can buy additional foodstuffs eg chocolate, pot noodles, spread, jam , bread etc.

However because my son has had behaviors and he can't conform to their strict rules they have withdrawn his canteen for months and when he is allowed access to it he is allowed to spend 5 pounds a week.  In essence they have weaponised hunger to enforce consequences for my sons autistic outbursts.

My son is hungry and is skin and bones now .

Furthermore they have stopped his visits with myself and his mum and we are allowed only to see him behind a thick glass . The visits that were stopped were where we could actually sit and talk to him , hold hands and more importantly buy him food from the visitors center where the  visits are held .

The reason the visits were stopped is my son attempted to smuggle a few orios out back to his cell as he stated he would be hungry as no access to the canteen for food .

It is absolutely unbelievable that Parc Prison with its autistic accreditation are doing this to a young vunerable adult.

The list of things they have done is endless and they treat him like a dog .

I have emailed the prison countless times and have asked them to take into account his autism.

I am at my wits end with no one to turn too .

My son sits in a cell 24hrs a day 7 days a week and they were good enough to with draw his medication from him a few weeks back .

Today my son managed to phone me and inform me that one of his meals he was served yesterday had been dedicated in by a fellow prisoner and when he complained to the staff he was laughed at ..

The NAT should go back to parc prison and withdraw their accreditation..

  • I wouldn't nessiceraly say hidden footage but document everything. Keep a diary of everything he tells you about. If you have any communication with the prison try to keep records or even record it if you can.

  • Yes I concur with others..its time to get the heavy hitters in as the treatment he is getting is like something from the medieval ages. Get the big boys in ie lawyers etc

  • You know what I would do..take secret footage of how he is being treated and put it on you tube or threaten them that you will take it to a lawyer ..seriously this IS NOT RIGHT he probably shouldn't even be in there in first place.i have no doubt that due to his autism he need different help not just lock him up..sorry but this country a DISGRACE.

  • Have you considered contacting your MP?  I think they could maybe have some influence.  I would suggest you see him/her in their constituency surgery and have a face-to-face discussion.

  • I’ve got to be honest if things are as bad as you say they are, and the prison is as set in its ways as you describe, your best option is to lawyer up. The equality act applies to the public functions of government entities including prisons. What you describe sounds like they might be a violation of several sections of the act. Failure to make reasonable adjustments, discrimination arising from disability. Harassment or victimisation possibly if you can pursued  a judge that some of the rough treatment is because he’s autistic or requested reasonable adjustments.

    get a lawyer.
