Should I get a diagnosis?

Stuff like having the same interests my entire life and spending so many hours in them, having to be constantly moving( pacing a lot, moving my legs around a lot occasionally rocking back and forth, moving side to side when standing up, playing with my hair a lot, tapping, and fiddling with objects, and having sensitivity to sound are my main symptoms. I can’t make eye contact, I’ve only had one friend my entire life and I’m really introverted, I often take jokes too literal, i can’t express my feelings well and I have low empathy. Out of all the common symptoms, following as routine is the only I don’t care for since most of my activities are unpredictable and how long they should take.

Here are my scores from various tests:

AQ-10: 7
AQ: 37
RBQ-2A: 39
EQ: 7
RAADS-R: 149

SHOULD I TRY TO GET A DIAGNOSIS?

  • Although I have one concern, I went to the specialist when I was around 2 and they said I didn’t have autism but for the past 2 years I have had the same symptoms with the same intensity. I feel like it really started to show off when I was 11. I mean I’ve been socially awkward my entire life but other symptoms really started to who during that time period.

  • Hi, I would approach your GP and ask for a referral. Your test scores are all consistent. Not many people who realise they are autistic turn out not to be. Traits often don’t show up until we start to be  put under higher levels of stress. If you have an assessment and found not to be autistic then you have lost nothing. I only realised a year ago that I’m autistic and at the age of 54 it has and is a continuous learning curve. Once you start to process it all, it then makes more and more sense.

  • Yeah when I was 11 I had just started middle school and it was slightly overwhelming, not only that but playing chess had become a big hobby for me and I put lots of hours into it every day, sometimes it made me really stressed. At the time and now I really had two obsessive hobbies and those were chess and my curiosity towards the physics field, in fact the following year I started learning calculus and trigonometry. I’m no genius but I think I have an above average iq and I think having those autistic traits or maybe even having autism helped there.
