Private assessment issues

Hello,

I am a 42 year old woman trying to find a private service that can provide an adult autism assessment.

I contacted a service and completed their onboarding questionnaire. They emailed saying they were not the right service for me due to me having experienced childhood abuse and having drunk heavily for a period many years ago. They recommended that I seek assessment through the NHS.

I do not want to go through the NHS and am seeking private assessment. I geared myself up for contacting them and going through with this and they turned me away without even speaking to me. My trauma does not affect me anymore and I have not drank excessively for 15 years.

Does anybody know of a private service that may be willing to assess me?

Thank you.

  • I've just gone through a process of an Adult Assessment with www.rtnmentalhealthsolutions.com.

I would describe myself as similiar to you in history, and of a similar age.

I specifically avoided the NHS because I wanted to be in control of letting a diagnosis "out of the bag".

RTN will require someone to answer questions about your childhood and also someone to answer questions about how you are today, so you will need people you trust to be discrete about the process.

My experience with RTN is a sample of 1 and I have no basis for other comparison.

It took about 8 weeks from start to finish.

All the best. Feel free to PM me.

  • There are many factors involved in deciding which service to use, and there are no right or wrong answers, but I would be interested to know what you mean by the NHS meaning you wouldn't be in control of the diagnosis being 'let out of the bag'.

I was diagnosed by my local NHS service and the process was entirely confidential at every stage pre and post diagnosis. They wanted to speak to my parents, which I didn't want, and they were ok with that. Noone other than my GP was informed (with my express consent).

  • There is a limit to the confidentiality of medical records. I recently recieved an entire medical history for someone else. Including suicide attempts and issues related to OCD.

The UK government has also decided that in order to acquire a Firearms Certificate you need a permission slip from your GP, this has the effect of leaking an Autism Assessment to the Police.

If you seek any disability allowances or support there is now another raft of people aware of the diagnosis.

Employment Applications can also request full access to medical history.

Feel free to call me paranoid, but I'm sufficiently jaded by people "just trying to helpful" having a negative outcome on my life that my privacy is of highest priority.

    Regards
