Hi all,
Is it better to get a private diagnosis rather than an NHS one?
A typical private assessment seems to cost around the £1,000 mark, though both less and more expensive ones exist. They can be done online with some version of a secure video-call, so geography is unimportant.
Waiting times for private assessment seem to be around a month for many providers.
Contrary to some opinion, private diagnosis is as valid as an NHS diagnosis. Though NHS assessments tend to be though teams of clinicians this is not necessary, and diagnosis by a suitably qualified clinician is sufficient.
Taken verbatim from the NICE guidelines for the assessment of ASD, "Diagnostic assessment, which in the UK uses ICD-10, is often within a multi-disciplinary team but at a minimum is by a qualified clinician, usually a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist or neurologist." From the document: Autism Recognition, referral, diagnosis and management of adults on the autism spectrum, National Clinical Guideline Number 142, p. 25.
