ADHD meds and hypersensitivity

Just wondering whether any autistic/ADHD people out there take ADHD meds like Medikinet or Concerta?  I have a sneaking suspicion that, although these drugs improve focus, they might increase sensory sensitivities.  I tend to keep a log of responses over time for my older son and I keep getting the feeling that his ADHD meds also increase his sensitivities, and especially his interoception.  So he's more focussed but less comfortable in his own body (i.e. his focus on bodily "symptoms" is also heightened).

Does anyone else find this?

  • Yes, thank you, that makes perfect sense and very much in line with what my son seems to be experiencing.  I'm quite worried that, although they do help with focus, this focus can easily be on uncomfortable or painful sensory issues.  But we've found no alternative.

  • Hi Jenny,

This is purely anecdotal, but my experience is yes. For me (Elvanse 30mg), the medication has either worsened sensory issue or has made them more noticeable by allowing me to focus on them. What's odd is I can externally reactive to them, i.e. I can power on through them for longer in discomfort, but they are certainly much more pronounced.

Hope that's helpful in some way!
