What is masking? (Short Video)

Hello Everyone,

Just sharing a North East Autism Society video on the subject of masking, being discussed by three of my favourite speakers, Kieran Rose, Amy Pearson and Jodie Smitten.

  • Hello, thanks for the video. Kieran Rose and Jodie Smitten are great autistic advocates. I have not seen much of Amy Pearson’s work apart from the paper on masking she co-authored with Kieran.

It’s a brilliant paper, it collates all the autistic theories on autistic experience to understand the context of masking.

    Have you read the paper?

Thanks again, I will watch the video later.

  • Hi

I really resonated with the post conversation discussions I have with myself.

Was listening with earphones to the video when a colleague came into the office, they said hi and I said it back, did I pull my earphones out and have a chat? Did I heck! Did I think about all the stuff I could have said to them after they left? 100% correct

This is one of the reasons I struggle with friendships because I don't really care about the small talk that often pre ludes a friendship (I'm totally guessing that's how they work) , I can talk your face off on a subject I like but sometimes I have to rehearse things before I say them.

    Hope this makes sense

    Great video Thumbsup

I don’t care about neurotypical small talk either, it just seems unnecessary and superficial. I much prefer in depth conversations, it’s much more natural for me and more enjoyable. Many other autistics prefer this type of interaction too. It’s part of our natural communication style.

Yes your comment makes lots of sense.
