Negative views of autism and how people act.

Hi everyone,

i have been reading a number of posts over the last few days on this site but I feel that I need to say something.

The views of people on here very from one extreme to the other. I find this sad in so many ways. I am 47 years old and got my official diagnosis two months ago. Due to my age I have spent the time since looking back in to my past and trying to peace things together. I have come to some conclusions.

first off I don’t understand what people mean by “normal” people. To me I am normal. Yea different from people and family around me but everyone is different. We all have our good and bad sides. People with autism may well focus better and a lot of times are a lot more loyal. Is that a weakness or a strength? Yep a lot of use do have problems with relationships, but as we get older everyone has problems with relationships may the be friends or love ones. It just is not so important as you get older. Do we have “superpowers”? No well not like in the movies. There are as many people who have made a difference to the world with out autism as there is who does.

From what I have read on here, the main thing people want is to be excepted. We are all excepted, but maybe not the way we would like to be. I read a comment about how the gay community which is smaller gets more attention than us. Maybe but in many cases it is the wrong sort of attention. I would have thought the community just wanted acceptance like us. Surly acceptance would mean the normal?

I have talked a lot here but I want to leave this with this last comment. A lot of people with autism feel lost and very alone. For a lot of my life I felt that I had no one to talk too. No one who would understand, in many ways I still do. This site should be a place where everyone feels that they can just be who they are. A place where they can find help and support to get them through their life’s. If Autism should stand for anything it should that we know how hard and cruel life can be, and that is why we kinder and more supportive because we have autism.

Thank you for reading my rant today.

  • I totally agree that we can be kinder and supportive because we have autism, I have always felt that. I think knowing what its like to be rejected makes us more understanding of others that are rejected and I think thats a lovely thing. Thank you for saying that

As for being normal, I think a lot of us have tried very hard to be normal most of our lives, I know I used to, and yet have always been told and made to feel by the rest of the world that we are'nt normal. When I see how cruel and unkind the world is I am glad that they dont think I am like them
