Autism assessment waiting list

Hi everyone,

I'm 23, and I began to suspect I was autistic in early 2021. My GP referred me to the local adult autism assessment service in April 2021. I didn't hear back from them by October 2021, so I contacted the service and discovered that I wasn't coming up on their waiting list because I was on a waiting list FOR the waiting list. After a lot of badgering and back-and-forthing I managed to get a place on the waiting list proper.

In February 2022 I recieved a letter saying that I should be contacted soon regarding my assessment, and that if I didn't hear back by the 28th of March, I should contact them. The date came, so I called them, and the woman on the phone seemed genuinely surprised that I'd followed the instruction to call (why??? I mean, why tell me to do it if they didn't want me to?) She told me that the letter was a formality, and I probably wouldn't hear back from them for a while and to just be patient.

It's now September 2022, which means that I have been waiting approximately 16 and a half months for an assessment. I haven't heard back from them since that phone call. How long does this usually take? I don't mind waiting, but I'd at least like an estimate time so I can prepare myself for it. It's like constantly walking around waiting for a pile of bricks to fall on your head. Is there any way I can try to speed up the process, or will they get annoyed with me if I contact them too much?

I hope someone might be able to shed some light on this for me - the whole system is seriously confusing.
