On Sunday, I went into the local Tesco, about an hour before closing time. Already unconsciously braced for the harsh lighting within, I was surprised to find the place bathed in a much more retina-friendly glow instead. Not exactly ambient, but better. When I looked up, I could see that the sqaure ceiling lights all over the place were at about half the normal strength, maybe less. While the place was still noisy and busy and I still wanted to minimise my time in there, just that one difference did help quite a bit with the sense of 'everything all at once' that can take hold especially when one's 'spoons' are low that day.
What I'm wondering is, is that something Tesco now does? Dims the lights at certain times of day to facilitate highly sensitive people? Or is it something more economically driven, like energy costs getting high? Or maybe they've just changed the lighting fixtures in some way? I was a bit too self conscious to stop a staff member and ask, and maybe when I next go back the lighting lottery will have things back to normal. If anyone knows, or has had a similar experience, I'd be grateful to know the score.
