Should people on the Autistic Spectrum be given extra assistance at Airports?

Manchester Airport have made a new rule which might soon apply to other airports.

The rule is that if one asks to be shown the way to the plane one has to pay up to sixty pounds.  That is for nervous flyers.

If one has a physical disabilty one will still get assistance free of charge under the EQUALITY ACT which  has replaced the Disability Discrimination Act.

I have often been helped at airports on one occasion someone asked why I should be helped as I am not in a wheel chair.

The question must be asked if one is on the Autistic Spectrum can one be shown round Manchester Airport free of charge?

Not finding your way is not directly to do with Autism but it has with some of our Co-Existing conditions.

There should be a page for campaigns and possible campaigns to post to but there is not.  If I could I would have posted this on possible campaigns.

  • I have looked up Manchester Airport and they help people with disabilities including learning disabilities.

    I did not see anything about the new sixty pounds charge for people who are not disabled but feel they need help.

    I expect some Disabled people might end up paying as they might not want to admit they are disabled.

  • as usual there will be overall guidelines by the BAA, is Manchester any different to another airport ? this is the sort of information and guidance which the NAS should know off the cuff,, NAS 80 million should buy a lot of smarties ? but seems to only buy more dummies

    Question is ? why are we even discussing this subject,, WE SHOULD EASILY KNOW, via BAA, NAS or any other crumbie parasitial intercessor organisation, that is why they exist, to tell us there ********

  • But there's a huge difference between wanting help because you've never flown before and needing help because your Autism means you have no sense of direction / can't understand maps.

  • The article did not say if people with Learning Difficulties have to pay.

    All it said was that Nervous Flyers would have to pay but disabled people and children would not have to pay.  In fact they cannot legally charge someone in a wheel chair.

    Many people who are not disabled who have not flown before would want extra help and those are the people they are going to charge.

    It is not really fair to charge people who want help because they are not used to airports but there is nothing in law which bans them from doing that.

    Someone should find out if people with invisible disabilities count as disabled at Manchester Airport.

  • It's discrimination (unless you can justify it) to treat certain groups of people less favourably. I don't understand how they can justify charging someone with learning disabilities for assistance; but not a physical disability.

    Some of us with Autism are affected physically (sensory issues, speech difficulties, etc) - so where do we fall - physical or learning disability?

  • I understand the Equality Act does not require people to make allowances for bad behaviour.

    I am not sure if the Equlity Act would oblige the airport to provide assistance for people with learning difficulties and developmental disorders or mental illness if they need it free of charge.  Someone should approach Manchester Airport and ask them if people would those disabilities are exempt from the new charge.

    The sixty pound charge does not even cover carrying lugage.

    Those disabilities are invisible disabilities.

  • society is a money monkey system of monkey business, autism is a business for the monkeys, so pay up. You can't have your banana and eat it. Get in reality, equality just depends on the size of your army backing you up, political risk and disruption factor and its effects on the cost to benefit ratio.

    How about asking for that free tour,, not getting it,, going on the plane having a meltdown and getting them to emergency land in sea, that will teach the profit makers making free monkey money from the vulnerability and thus think again.
