Social Rules

When I filled in a referral form for the local Integrated Autism Service (IAS) I was asked 'Do you have an example of an unspoken social rule that you have struggled with?'

I struggled to answer this question as I did not understand what was meant by an unspoken social rule.

Therefore if anyone can give me examples of an 'unspoken social rule' then it might help me understand what they are referring to ahead of my assessment.

  • One example that I can think of is when people introduce themselves by saying their name and then just stand and look at you and there is a long awkward silence. They expect you to then tell them what you are called but don't actually ask you what your name is. Somehow we are just supposed to know this. I didn't know until somebody explained to me when I was 36! I could not figure out why people often looked awkward after they had told me their name.
