Disclosing diagnosis at work

I was interested in people's experiences of disclosing their diagnosis at work, to help me decide whether I should.

I was diagnosed last week. I have worked for my employer for 6 years. I'm lucky that I work from home, mainly report writing etc. The levels of interaction with other people are manageable. I am very good at masking. I don't really need any adjustments as I manage my own work environment. So I don't need to tell anyone, so part of me thinks 'what's the point in telling anyone?'

On the other hand, I do think that sometimes I may be seen as less friendly / less sociable than others, and maybe a bit off hand or even rude. So part of me thinks that I should disclose, because they should know why they think that is the case, and I can be myself.

I just don't know what to do. I realise that only I can make this decision, but I was really interested to hear other people's experiences.

  • Hello,

I have recently been diagnosed, ( May this year) and I’ve worked for my employer for 20 years. I told my manager as it was so important to me to be understood. She has been great and let’s me take a break if it gets too busy. I work in a customer facing role, part time. I also told the works disability advisor, just so they know- then you are covered if you need reasonable adjustments which you are entitled to. Then I told a few selected colleagues just so they were aware of it. I can honestly say it’s been positive so far with lots of support. I’m 55 so I’m still getting used to my diagnosis but for me it’s been good to tell my employer. It’s personal to you though, this is just my experience. Best of luck and good wishes.
