Aucademy videos on Situational Mutism

Hello fellow autistic people, I thought I would post these videos again so they are more easily accessible for everyone.

I hope these videos are of interest to you. Just an unrelated thought, I particularly like Ben’s Marvel memorabilia collection in the first video.

  • Thanks! I did listen to that Aucademy discussion before, and its a fascinating topic. I think I experience something very like that in extremis. And almost a kind of pre-emptive hoarseness when I know a challenging situation (a meeting, having to make a tannoy announcement, being in a gathering of more than about three people) is coming up later that day.

  • You are very welcome. SM is a fascinating topic, something I find easier to discuss now it doesn’t affect me anymore.

The situations you describe do sound anxiety inducing.  When you say about being in a gathering of more than about three people is it because your brain is monotropic and therefore knows it will be overwhelmed by having to focus on multiple attention tunnels?

Are these gatherings majority neurotypical or majority autistic? I ask this because as you probably know in one of the videos Harry says there is a connection to the mutism. It’s because you instinctively know you are safer and belong in a majority autistic group.

Interesting to chat about your experience.
