Shutdowns & Meltdowns

How to they appear in you?

I find I suffer migraines from over stimulation, mutism when I'm surrounded by too much verbal input, or I then can't sleep overnight.

If I have too much nervous energy for an interview, an unplanned trip somewhere new or journey I'm concerned with then I develop gut issues (diarrhea etc).

Are these responses typical in ASC I wonder?

  • In a word; yes. Boy! Tell me about the gut issues, lol. Ouch

As for shut/melt down more generally, we all experience these differently in different contexts. I'm more inclined to shut down; the body is in the room but the brain is parked three streets away, I can't talk or talk much and if I do, don't make sense, and I'm taking nothing in and often can't remember what was going on around me.

But medical context, from which there is no escape can provoke 'bolt' or wall thumping effing and blinding type meltdowns, which bang out of nowhere. And I promise that's not a behaviour I'd in any way choose.

Mercifully, outside of a surgery a meltdown is rare and I'd be more inclined to be found intensely sobbing and rocking behind locked doors.

  • Thanks for the reply, sorry to read of your struggles. I myself don't seem to ever lose control or act out anything, but my body seems to have internal responses without my control, migraines, shivers, muscle spasms, IBS, ibd, tinnitus, nausia... it's an ever growing list
