very hard to "take in" youtube vids for work

so, i start a voluntary job tomorrow, which om looking forward to and plan to do as many days as i can to just "escape" from this place im in and the people i have to share it with for most the days

however, i have to watch 3 mandatory training videos emailed to me, which are done via youtube

now they seem pretty common sense and "dont be an A-hole" stuff, but ive found it very hard to take any of it in aswell as trying to remember things i was told/explained at the interview/tour today

i remember bits and pieces of things, i think because i was reading the subtitles, but there was so much to take in, it kept going from one thing to another, and to quote "every time i learn something new, it pushes something old out of my brain" lol

also the subtitle misspelling said that bhf is "a vigilante organisation" and that just through my concentration right off lol.

so, hmm, is it worth trying to explain that to them tomorrow? im not quite sure how to explain it in honesty, "im not good at learning through videos" just doesn't sound right, if they were broken into smaller videos so i could ram things into my head that way it would be fine i think

thanks in advance for any replies

  • i thought i was going to be, but i wasn't in the end, and it went well

so pretty much worried for no reason lol

  • I hate video content too. It's the most inefficient way of delivering information.

Are you being tested on the content? If not, it's likely that they don't expect you to remember it and just want to be able to say they've given you training. Most NTs will probably skim it and then immediately forget it.

  • hello all again, thanks for the advice, i woke up stupidly early and wrote some notes down with pausing the videos, going to brush up on it at library before i go in today

i attempted the thinking about the day suggestion, my recall is a lot better that way, but dozed off shortly after.

i remember kind of visual aswell as spoken that way, so hopefully i can keep practicing that.

    again, thank you all.

  • haha yeah, i got all excited, then realised "wait, it meant vigilant, it isnt a vigilante organisation!" oh well lol

oh god, that sounds awful, clearly someone got a bit too excited making videos and threw in everything they could to "liven" it up

ironic and hypocritical at once eh, well done for putting up with it lol

also, ive seen a few people mention having a vivid imagination on here, i think i do too, is that considered an autistic trait?

    cheers

  • The idea of watching training videos for a vigilante organisation is quite a comical one and I can certainly see why it would throw your concentration off!

I recently had to watch a series of training videos for my job too. The opening sequence was music playing and clapping and clicking sounds played over the top. Whilst all of these sounds were playing, the presenter was speaking over the top of all of this and describing the content of each video. Confusing and off putting don’t quite do it justice. I genuinely felt like it was giving me whiplash and I didn’t take a word in. Ironically some of the videos were about helping people learn and being adaptive to peoples needs!

Anyway, I found a combination of the ideas mentioned above useful (pausing, recalling the information covered up to that point and writing notes). I also find things like making a bit of a flow chart if it’s activities that require an order, but also playing a scenario out in my head can sometimes help (imagination can be a useful tool, as it’s quite vivid for me).

  • true, i suppose i always try to do things in a rush.

will give that a go tomorrow too

  • Hi,

I watch 5 minutes of a YouTube video then pause, then watch another 4 or 5 minutes later etc.
