What is Autism to you?

Hello

I have High Functioning ASD and I am trying to write information about autism to use when I go on courses with cadets. As a part of this I need to explain what autism is-which is a lot harder to do than it sounds! Even just on this website their is a lot of information and I am really struggling to work out what is important? and what is most relevent and needs to be included? all while trying to make sure it is not too long so the people I show acually read it.

So, I want to ask. What is Autism to you?
Could you imagine you are talking (or typing online because you are and that is easier than talking) to a stranger who has neve heard of Autism. Ignoring any issues about beeing to scared of saying something what would you say?  They ask
1)What is Autism?
2)How does it affect you?
Please can you write all this in a paragraph of 4-6 sentances (about the length of these paragraphs the exact lenght is not important though so do not worry about length) that answes these questions.  I am insterested in what information you think is important and that you include.

Many Thanks

  • Hi

Having spent a few moths after diagmosis being only aware of the parts that I have trouble with I'm now focussing on the good bits, the bit NT society doesn't measure or mention

I like being more straightforward and honest that is usual for most people

I like having a different way of thinking that gets me to the solution faster than my co-workers

I like the simple joy I get from patterns and images that please me

    There;s a lot more but that's a start!

    Good luck with your work.

How is what I am asking a study survay or media work Alex? All I am trying to do is to help inform other people about autism and how they can help me, do you or the NAS have an issue with that?

No - and I certainly didn't say, or mean to imply, that there was anything wrong with what you're doing, or that you should leave. Please don't.

I was just pointing out that what you were doing might look like research to some people, and that there are limits on what you can use responses for.

    I hope this clarifies things.

    Best wishes,

And I never said I would not share the finished article, just that I had not thought about it yet. It's not really an articale either if that is giving you ideas I am doing some kind of survay. It is just information about autism to give to staff when I go on courses with cadets. But if it is causeing this many problems I will copy it below.

No idea what I have done wrong but clearly as with every other site I use something I say has upset someone. Maybe I thought you might be more understanding of how autism affects me here but obviously not, I suppose I should no longer use this site as well then?

Autism is a disability that affects how a person’s brain works. It is a spectrum condition so each person is affected in different ways but everyone has common symptoms.  Many autistic people are more sensitive to noise, smells, touch, light or tastes.  They generally prefer a fixed routine and plenty of advanced notice of changes because new or unfamiliar situations are scary. People with autism also have problems with language such as similes, metaphors, jokes or sarcasm. They generally take language literally as well as thinking literally and can misinterpret hidden meanings from the language or body language used. Other common symptoms are struggling with eye contact, dislike of being touched or having intense special interests.

  • Hi Amy,

While I appreciate that your request is not quite like other research requests we get here, I should remind you to abide by Rule 6 of the community:

"If you are looking for people to take part in research studies, surveys or media work then visit out page about research and participation to find out how to contact us. Do not use the Community to make these requests without permission and approval from the NAS."

At the very least, I think caretwo is right - it would be helpful to the community if you could let us see the finished article.

    Many thanks,

  • I am glad we all have done your homework for you Tongue Out

  • I had not really thought about that, I could do if you would want me to though. Not sure exactly when it will be finished yet though but I need it for a course on the 23rd June.

  • Hello

    Thank you for the replys

I partiqually like the poem caretwo. Althoug like you said it is not 1 paragraph and i now need to work out how I can use some of your ideas in the final paragraph I need to write.

But thank you to everyone who replied with different ides-that is what I wanted. Anyone else who reads then please also reply.

  • Autism to me is extreme introversion and self-preoccupation; an extra-sensual world with the self-body at the heart of experience. The world is experienced at a distance, at one remove, and it constantly threatens to invade my inner sanctuary by creating ripples and then waves of chaos. The self is the supreme arbiter and comforter, even though it is often experienced in a fragmented and distorted way: who am I really?

Autism  is ritual and repetitive behaviour, curiosity and a need to collect information and to understand the world.

Autism is chronic anxiety and an inability to relax.

  • caretwo - I thought your poem very accurate in explaining what it is like to be an Aspie.

(As an after-thought, I suppose all your lines could be 'turned around' to describe the NT world.)

    Smile

  • Autism is Sheldon of the big bang theory,, autism is social barriers, autism is thinking about thinking on subjects that no one is mainly interested in. Autism is a social innocence and wonderment of nature. Autism is a gift to the few for the few. Autism is pain. Autism is a cist in the heart which is too open. I am too alive. Autism is introverted and socially restricted. With Autism you never emotionally grow up, to cope fully. Autism is emotional hyper sensitive and hyper sensitive to the environment and less adaptable. Autism has loving eyes.
