Anxiety and agroraphobia

Hi guys
I’m struggling to leave the house. I’m scared and start to bend.l start to have anxiety when going outside. I don’t want people to come next to me I just want to be left alone when outside. Don’t get me wrong, I’m also looking for friends but because of this anxiety when going outside I feel it’s hard for me. Is anyone taking something to help with these feelings as it’s affecting my quality of life.

  • Thoughts we have about going out usually affect our feelings and we get anxious, or it increases, and so with agoraphobia.  You should see your GP about these really as you may be tensing up when you go out.  Medication can help, but thinking better about going out can help.  Be careful how you think before and during going out, it helps to self-coach yourself.  Think things like 'Its difficult to go out, but I want to go out, I will cope".  People in our personal space can be difficult, but just feel whatever you feel - try not to dwell on thoughts about it, and think 'i can cope'.  When we start to think better about things then our brain is less stressed/agitated and we can do difficult things more easily, and if we reassure ourselve when we our out then our brain is calmer about things and it builds confidence.  Worrying and avoiding things tells our brains we can't cope well, and we can be trapped like that.  What also helps is focussing on other things when we go out, scan people and things around us and try and pick out enjoyable/positive things that you see/hear so its not all negative/stressful.    If we just focus on ourselves then it can be more difficult, or we just want to avoid it, but that isn't good for us.

    So see your GP as explain it all, write it down first if it helps.
