Being an Autistic parent

Hi, I was diagnosed with ASD at 37 last year and it has explained a lot for me, but still getting my head round it.

My eldest daughter is 16 next month and has noticed and commented on things that I struggle with, for example social interaction difficulties, taking longer to process information or to reply when asked a question by people unfamiliar to me, my rituals and so on.

I really don’t know whether to tell her the reason is that I’m autistic, so it explains why I am like I am to her, or whether it’s best leaving well alone. Has anybody had any experiences of this themselves as an autistic parent and what was the outcome?

Thank you for reading.

  • I was diagnosed with ASC one day before my 19 year old daughter was, so we were going down the same route at the same time. I always feel that knowledge is far better than ignorance. If your daughter has noticed 'strange behaviour' in you, giving her a reason for it can only be good for both of you.
