Being an Autistic parent

Hi, I was diagnosed with ASD at 37 last year and it has explained a lot for me, but still getting my head round it.

My eldest daughter is 16 next month and has noticed and commented on things that I struggle with, for example social interaction difficulties, taking longer to process information or to reply when asked a question by people unfamiliar to me, my rituals and so on.

I really don’t know whether to tell her the reason is that I’m autistic, so it explains why I am like I am to her, or whether it’s best leaving well alone. Has anybody had any experiences of this themselves as an autistic parent and what was the outcome?

Thank you for reading.

  • The diagnosis for Autistic "Neuro-Wiring" has expanded due to the model of our current social structures and it's values. It is absolutely imperative for her to know this, as the ability to recognise ones strengths and limits are crucial in judging future partners, career choices. Knowledge of boundaries and where I excel is unique to being and feeling successful (regardless of income or career path - I can 100% be and feel successful in soley mothering), and someone who continues to run into invisible walls/unidentifiable failure.

This model of Western Capitalism in all its forms values competition, something obtuse and irrelevant to the way we naturally think. Built on that 'value' is NeuroTypical society (with its own set of malfunctions and misfirings), and being the majority, favour Competition over Connexion. These 2 fundamental ways of being in one's 'tribe' / social, economic and corporate groupings are at odds. Our Autistic-Wiring tends to always be in a type of analysis or that of: making connexions. One cannot be so easily influenced and discover a round planet when it could mean being ostracised or worse, imprisonment .

NeuroTypical relationships are structured around hierarchy with an enchanting flair for theatrics. Autistics are better suited behind-the-stage, where the structure and function is happening. Neither are less important for tribal bonds and growth, but as economics outweighs aesthetic (functionality with intentionality and respect to what is natural), sensory assault from non-human-friendly affects, which NeuroTypicals easily dull out, and cheap but toxic food sources which might not affect their biology as quick as ours, is on the rise.

    Never was awareness more important.

This said, find all the good things in it! Then help her see how you appreciate this amazing things about your self :)
