Getting help? (Waffles on a bit)

My dad has suggested that I get a support worker. I struggle with getting day to day things done at my home where I live with my partner. I work full time witch is so so draining for me and looking at cutting my hours down but currently can’t afford it. My conditions have gotten worse and I struggle every day. We are trying to move and getting nowhere and it’s hard when his 2 lovely boys come to stay for the weekend. but I feel like I can’t seem to get away from anything. They are lovely boys and I do love them they can just be loud that’s all and with work as well I’m so tired all the time. My dad said a support worker would be good as they can help us move and help me at home. I’m currently going through a PIP revaluation so I have to wait for that but I’m worried that if I apply for a support worker they won’t believe me. What do I do and I how can I go about it? Please help!

  • Hi Wave thank you for your reply! I’m concerned that the support worker wouldn’t believe me. Sounds silly when I say it but it’s been drilled into me from a young age that I can’t use my autism or any of my other of my issues as a reason for not being to do things because people won’t believe me.  I had to fight my first case because they awarded me nothing and made so many mistakes and I even had a child support worker then! So if I went thought work what sort of things would I need to gather for evidence? Like photos of my flat? (Witch is a tip sad to say)

  • Do you mean the people who you have to apply to to get a support worker won't believe you or the people who conduct your PIP assessment won't believe you? If its the latter just provide as much evidence as you can and also appeal if you don't get the result your entitles do.... I think its something ridiculous like 70% ish appeals get overturned in favour of the claimant, so there is obviously something not right with the assessment.

Theres a few options you have, one is for an home assessment that is more for equipment rarther than for a support worker Apply for equipment for your home if you're disabled - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The second is through NHS continuing care but you have to access this through yoru GPs as its different for each area.

The third as you are in work is through access to work, they can provide equipment, coaching, support workers they also have mental health support you can acces, all dependant on your needs. Just bare in mind once they start your assessment process they do not give you very long to gather evidence approx 2 weeks, So I would gather this evidence beforehand if poss.

Access to Work: get support if you have a disability or health condition: What Access to Work is - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

I think it can be difficult to ask for help when you feel you are struggling especially when there are barriers in place that make asking for help even harder but it is worth it even though it is hard :s

    Hope that is helpful
