Autscape Conference 8 - 11 August 2022

This year could be the last Autscape Conference as about 100 tickets have not been sold. Normally it sells out straight away but the cost of living crisis, the cost of fuel & Covid have had an impact this year. Autscape will go ahead this year, but as it is a not for profit organisation they won't have the funding to do another event if they don't sell all the tickets.

The Autscape community are rallying round to try to make more people aware of the event. If anyone does want to go to Autscape then this could be the last chance. Please can you share this with anyone who might be interested

Autscape is a very special place for many Autistic people, but like a lot of things, we will lose it if we don't support it.  The speakers are all Autistic & it is a great place to learn more about autism, share experiences with people, talk about co conditions and make new friends. • Yes, everyone needs to have that sense of belonging. It’s one of Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

  • Yes, it was nice to be in an environment where autistics are the majority. When I was younger I went to summer music festivals and found that even at festivals, people will try and bully autistic people. At Autscape it was a much nicer environment and there were more people I could relate to.

  • I am glad you enjoyed it so much and found it useful. It must be really nice to be in an environment where autistics are the majority. I have heard another autistic person on Aucademy say that when you leave Autscape and get back to ‘reality’ (being among a majority of neurotypicals) you can feel quite low.

  • I attended in 2019 and also last year which was online due to Covid. I liked the badges too. They had communication preferences, the pronouns people wanted to use and you can put a circle if you are happy to hug. It was a superb environment for autistic people and a lot of thought had gone into it. I will attend this year and aim to attend every year as it is a real highlight of the summer. Like a lot of people once I had been to Autscape once I decided to go every year.

When I first went it was a leap into the unknown and I was quite apprehensive, but I needn’t have been as it was such an easy place to be with provisions made for everyone’s needs. It really helped me when I was newly diagnosed. I met some great people and learned so much about autism and people’s experiences. The food and the outdoor spaces at the venue were great and you could decompress and spend some time in nature between events. They also had a vintage games room with computer’s and consoles right through from the BBC micro through to the present day. I met people from all over the world. I felt sad that I had to go back into the world at the end of the conference

I would definitely recommend people attend as Autscape is such a great place and such a precious thing for the autistic community.

  • Thanks for the information. Autscape is really cool and I would love to attend but this year’s conference is too far away from where I live. I love the fact it is all autistic led. Do you also know about the communication cards so you can clearly indicate to others whether you want to engage in interaction? I think this is a great, in an ideal world it would be very useful if this system was implemented in wider society. Will you attend this year’s conference? If so, enjoy.
