Can these do what they set out to ?

  • Hi thanks for that which is helpful when wondering if to carry something & if so what. More and more i have been thinking i should get a card or a lanyard. And yes i sort of picked on the anglian one due to those wishy washy descriptions. A few too many for one system pack there i'd think.

    Thanks for the responses all.

I have given myself a fine headache spraying 'Raid' due to insects whilst fathoming what pass to get.

  • Hello, I have looked at the Autism Anglia Passport and the Alert Card, but I don’t like them. I know the card and passport are only meant to give an introduction to autistic experience and support needs in the event of a stressful situation/ emergency but I can’t relate to the description of autistic experience. I think the NAS alternatives are better.

I have an NAS I am autistic card but I don’t use it. However, it is reassuring to know that I can use it in a situation where I am unable to self advocate.

  • We shouldn't be forced to carry one of course

I shortened my sunflower lanyard and attached it to keyring with my keys, in emergency I can always take it out inconspicuously by pretending I'm looking for something in my pockets. thus revealing it to the threatening person/persons

  • It looks like many of my traits are similar to yours, though it must be nearly 10 years since i was diagnosed. I kind of looked into them again wondering if my attitude had changed about them.

  • I think they have a similar one here: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/resources/downloads/i-am-autistic

It seems like a good idea in theory. I mostly get by without needing to disclose my autism, so I doubt I'll be using it often. I have occasionally been in situations, however, where it might have been useful, such as if I have a panic attack in public, or if I have sensory overload so intense I literally find the nearest corner to curl up in a ball for a bit, and I lose my ability to speak. It's really hard to try and explain myself in those instances, and can make things worse when people 'try to help' by talking to me and ask me if I'm ok, so being able to just show them a card might be helpful. But that all depends if my brain is functioning enough to remember I have the card in the first place, and where I put it!

I was only diagnosed a few months ago so I'm still learning what kind of adjustments I actually need. I think there has to be a degree of customisation involved, as I wouldn't want to be telling people things about my condition that don't apply. I guess there's nothing to say we can't create our own cards, although it might help if people start to recognise the logos etc. automatically, so they don't have to spend time reading and being confused. A bit like the sunflower lanyards, which seemed to work really well. We shouldn't be forced to carry one of course, but I do think it's a good idea, especially for those who struggle with speaking.

  • Yes indeed i see those around from time to time.

  • I think Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Id Badge is more popular hiddendisabilitiesstore

  • Hi Steve

I'd vaguely heard of such cards, & when i happened across this one the other day i wondered how popular they were. Judging by response here they are not very widely used.

    Regards

  • Hello Grubby,

I've never heard of the Autism Passport and Alert Card. It looks really helpful for people with ASD, but with my type of Autism I don't ever get in situations that I need to alert people that I'm Autistic. I leave my house every 3-4 days to go shopping for food, and only people who know me for me while sense that I don't do very well in social situations.

    But thanks for posting them

    Steve
