My 8 year old son has a diagnosis of ASD, he is completely obsessed with toilets. For example, if we go to the zoo, or a park, he will hunt out the toilets and then refuse to come out, he is now old enough to realise he can go into the mens toilet without me, I can’t go in the mens, as his mother and he knows this. He will go inside, stay inside, and even when I call, he won’t come out. If I finally coax him out of the toilets, and we get near to the exit, he can suddenly run back and go into the mens toilet again, and watching the urinal water running around. He is extremely sensory, and will seek water to the point where he will run or jump into a lake, or pond, or river, and will immerse himself in the water, or mud, and seek sensory feedback. He is constantly dissecting our toilet, posting things in it, taking the cistern apart and even climbing into the toilet boil with his socks and shoes on. He will also stick his head in the toilet and make his hair wet.
I am at breaking point with this, I have tried visuals, social stories, coaxing, bribery, rewards for not touching the toilet, praise for keeping hands and feet to himself. Visual chart… but at a total loss, and after four years of this, it is exhausting, and I think he knows how much it upsets me, so does it all the more.
Please can anyone help me with this?
