Teacher told no DMs

I am totally freaking out! I have worn DMs to work at my primary school for 20 years. They are pretty much the only shoes I wear other than in the summer.

Just had an email today saying no DMs. I don't feel comfortable in any other shoes.  My Docs are part of what makes me, me.

What should I do  ? I am so worried about going to work tomorrow?

  • I think as an autistic person who is, presumably, more sensitive to tactile stimuli than the average person, that you have grounds to claim that your choice of comfortable footwear is constrained by your 'disability'. As such, any managerial dictat that denies you the choice of footwear and forces you outside of what you find comfortable, can be construed as discrimination on the grounds of disability.

In my experience, any hint to management that they may be discriminating against a disabled person, tends to get immediate positive results.

  • Good news! They are allowing me to continue wearing them !
