Awaiting assessment

Hey guys, my names ffion and I’m 21. I was referred to get a autism assessment by my GP but I’m still waiting. It’s been probably over 6 months now and I just feel like I’m in a limbo. Whenever I speak to people about possibly having autism they kind of dismiss it and I feel like because I haven’t had my assessment yet people don’t seem to empathise with my struggles. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same situation as me and advise from people who have had their assessment.
Many Thanks

  • Hi FFion,I was diagnosed with ASD 2 years ago,and had to wait some time for assessment.Try not to worry about the delay, your autism isnt going anywhere soon!I tried to research the subject as much as I could, just in order to understand the general terms used in asseessment etc.The NAS website has an amazing amount of information to peruse,so its a good place to start-you probably have done this I expect!Hope you dont have too much longer to wait.

  • I had my assessment about a month after booking it, I had a private diagnosis as I was fortunate enough to be able to afford it, and it seemed like an eternity. I imagine that no one in charge of NHS funding realises the distress and damage that prolonged waiting for assessment has on autistic people. In the month I waited, I did every autism test available, which all gave results in the autism spectrum, which helped a little.

  • I hope you hear something soon.  I'm not eligible for an assessment on the NHS, so I've had to look at private.  I think everywhere has long waiting lists.
