Autistic catatonia

Anyone in this group that has a child with autistic catatonia? My son is 27 he suffers from extreme anxiety that leads him to bend when going outside. He says hes scared. The problem is he really wants to go outside and have friends but he says he can't help it. When I ask why he bends he says he can't help himself. Is there anyone that can help us with this?

  • Thanks Anna.  I find it difficult, though, as many of these issues overlap and, leastways within our family, someof us will have more than one.

I'd like to see more on how to differentiate between some of the labels, as, somewhat surprisingly I think, Amitta Shah describes many of the effects of burnout but doesn't actually mention burnout at all (well, unless i've missed a small mentionin her book).  Whereas within the autistic community it's mentioned quite a lot, but catatonia is rarely referred to.

And, going back to the original post, the central issues seems to be fear, anxiety and withdrawal.  I think that what families need is strong advice and guidance in situations where loved ones have totally retreated, to the extent that they mainly live in just one room, their safe place.   Plus bear in mind that many will already be adults who, although they have capacity, might not want to consult anyone themselves (for obvious reasons as this would involve leaving their safe space and engaging with a system that, in many cases has already proved to be inadequate).
