Adult autism diagnosis costs - advice required

Hi my partner has just received a referral from his GP with suspected ASD. He is 49 & has been experiencing symptoms for many years. He is diagnosed with dyslexia but suspects it is also ASD.

I have asked a few Private Specialists how much they charge for an assessment & diagnosis, with the costs ranging from £1250 to over £2000. Waiting times vary from August 2022 to early 2023.

I was wondering if these are the average costs & timings or if there is a more affordable way of getting a diagnosis? He is currently very stressed by the whole process so unfortunately a long wait on the NHS is not an option at present.

Any advice/tips gratefully received!

Many thanks Slight smile

  • Sadly, yep! That's about right.

There is a diagnostic crisis in this country. The NHS waiting lists are  HUGE. If you can, pick a private provider whose qualifications you have confidence in and start saving while you wait. Their lists are shorter, but still long.

I went with the NAS own Lorna Wing Centre, who are the world's best. But costs will be less, if a clear cut case and a half day is needed, to more if a subtle presentation or their are MH complications; their clinical decision, for good reason.

And yes, I'm dyslexic too - another neurodivergence which, like dyspraxia and ADHD/ADD and a host of other things, occurs in clusters from the same genes.

Meanwhile, encourage your partner to hop on here. We'll help him out with his questions, while he's self-identified and in the queue for an assessment. This community did so much for me, while I was in that position.

  • Hi Dawn,

Thank you so much for your fast & detailed answer! Yes going through the NHS has already proved too stressful for him (lots of meltdowns) and so it is good to know that those fees are standard for a private diagnosis.

Thanks also for your welcome to the community - he is a bit shy himself to post on here but I will do so on his behalf Slight smile

    All the best!
