Advice about Diagnosis

Hello,

I am looking for advice around how to start the process of getting a diagnosis of Autism. I am 26 years old and up until a year ago did not consider myself autistic. Then late last year my partner showed me some research she has been looking at, she is currently doing her dissertation on people who are self diagnosed with autism. I initially dismissed it, however a few rabbit holes later and I now am pretty sure that I am. I do not feel confident enough to self diagnose with Autism, as I feel for myself that I need the stamp of approval from a professional who knows what they are looking at.

I have no idea where to start and the process feels overwhelming. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • As has been said go to your GP. Be prepared , show them what issues possibly ASD brings up in your life, be totally honest, don't hide the bad things. Have you tried the AQ 50 questions questionaire? They are easy to find online and pretty universal. Just be prepared for a long wait and the odd setback along the way. Have you talked to your parents about this? Did they ever suspect anything when you were young? They will probably be asked to play a part in any diagnosis. Good luck
