Advice about Diagnosis

Hello,

I am looking for advice around how to start the process of getting a diagnosis of Autism. I am 26 years old and up until a year ago did not consider myself autistic. Then late last year my partner showed me some research she has been looking at, she is currently doing her dissertation on people who are self diagnosed with autism. I initially dismissed it, however a few rabbit holes later and I now am pretty sure that I am. I do not feel confident enough to self diagnose with Autism, as I feel for myself that I need the stamp of approval from a professional who knows what they are looking at.

I have no idea where to start and the process feels overwhelming. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hello, the first step is to speak to your GP and explain all the reasons why you link you could be autistic. Some GP’s are very receptive, some will try to dismiss you. It is a postcode lottery. I found after the lightbulb moment that I started to make notes when memories started to surface. It’s a big help when explaining to the GP. The waiting list after a referral is 2-3 years. If you can afford to go private, I would recommend it. I’m using a unit in Oxford called Autism Oxford, I think they have a YouTube video which explains the process. Some people are happy to self diagnose and obviously that’s totally valid, I need the validation of a definite answer. Hope this helps.
