Stimming and comfort

Does anyone do what I call apeing, I’ve always loved to lean my head to one side and put my right arm over my head so it touches my left ear and clasp my left hand. I often tap my right heel at a fast rate as well. It just seems to calm me. I thought when realising that I am autistic that I had cracked it, The truth is that I’m still on page one of the none existent instruction manual.

  • I can understand why you do something like that. It is almost your brain trying to shut its self from a world it finds overwhelming. As somebody who only found out about ASD aged 50 I do stimm, I suck my thumb, I was never allowed to be anything but normal growing up. Have you been doing this all your life, how old are you, if you don't mind me asking.

  • Hi, I found out 4 months ago that I’m autistic. I’m 54, in school I would find ways to stim that wouldn’t be noticed, if it was then I would find something else. In a singe sex school in the 70’s and 80’s it really didn’t help to stand out. You became a target for the herd. I would bite my nails until they bled which I don’t do now. My wife is more open to me stimming at home
