Blue badge scheme

Hello has anyone had any success or in my case difficulties in getting a blue badge. I thought met criteria as higher rate PIP but having applied apparently I don’t meet it because under the criteria of overwhelming psychological distress which for me is a massive thing in going out  the wording in the statement of  ANY journeys means I am disqualified. I had a really nice supporting letter from GP too, so just wondered if anyone else is struggling as the reality of getting help is it seems far removed as obstacles and hurdles contained within wording means many hidden disabilities and non physical ones are ignored.

  • Hi NAS78070,

Thank you for sharing this with our community. You may like to take a look at our page about blue badges, https://www.autism.org.uk/what-we-do/news/blue-badge-changes-come-into-force-today

    I hope this helps!

    Kind regards,

  • Hi, I applied as I get high rate daily living and low rate mobility. I didn’t get it automatically and was rejected 1st time as I only had 4 points for each criteria. I then explained issues of safety in car parks as I have some hearing loss and sight issues and ASD and altogether that makes me unsafe with panics and meltdowns. If I could park next to or just outside places in a disabled space I’d be, and feel, much safer and be able to go out more. I got one after they’d looked at it again. I’d try and contact the person who actually made the decision and then you, or someone who knows you, can explain exactly why you’d benefit from having one. They might be able to use some discretion like they did with me.
If you’re always stressed about finding a parking space and then getting safely from the car to where you’re going then that will always be stressful etc when you go out.

    The rules are …

You’re automatically eligible for a Blue Badge if you either:

    • scored 8 points or more in the ‘moving around’ area of your PIP assessment
    • scored 10 points in the ‘planning and following journeys’ area of your PIP assessment and were put in category ‘E’ - this means your stress, anxiety or other mental health issue stops you leaving the house
