Has anyone taken diagnosis verbally from psychiatry rather than going through Autism Team?

Hi I just had a session with a Psychiatrist and she advised that she thinks I have high functioning Autism.  I asked if that was concrete and in writing so I could show it to my mother for validation and she said that I could get that by going through the autism team diagnostic assessment (for which I have been on the waiting list for a while.)  She said she would call them to try and speed up the process of my appointment on their waiting list.  I am confused and annoyed though, as I was led to believe that she could give me my diagnosis, but to me that means formal, not her just telling me.  I feel I need proof of it but I'm really frustrated at having to undergo more tests and wait for these.

Anyone had this experience?

  • It sounds like this is a provisional diagnosis by someone who knows enough to know it's likely but not enough to be absolutely confident in the field to formally diagnose it.  Hopefully though, the opinion will be on record and available to the autism team.  If she's trying to speed up the appointment, she's taking it seriously and recognises you have a more urgent need to know.
