Shutdowns

I just wanted to share this because I want to connect with other autistic people. This week I had a shutdown and I couldn’t speak or move, afterwards I started to use echolalia. In an odd way it almost felt really good because everything stopped and not being able to mask felt freeing, I could be my autistic self for a short time. Does anyone else feel the same when or after they shutdown?

Thanks for reading, it is really nice to be able to share these experiences and feel immediately understood.

  • Yes I agree it is really scary not being able to move and tell people how you feel, at least with a meltdown the distress is obvious to others. Shutdowns are the result of excessive stress that you haven’t processed yet. Could you change your environment to reduce shutdowns? What are the most common triggers?

     I hope this helps.
