Cohabiting

Just wondering how many Autistic people live with their other half's?

I have been in a relationship for a long time and we lived seperately until first lockdown 2020. He moved in with me for obvious reasons, sold his house and that's how it is now.

I do love him very much, but find sharing space 24/7 really hard. We've talked about him getting his own place again but he doesn't want to. He is very kind and understands my needs and really wants us to live together but it's very hard for me.

How do other people manage it?

  • We maintain a made-up bed in a spare room because of my insomnia.

If I can't sleep I quietly bail out because there's no point in both of us not sleeping.

The dog normally sleeps just outside the bedroom, but the spare bedroom is down the hall, and round a corner ... it amuses us that if I 'bail out' he sleeps in the corner of the hallway so he can keep an eye on both rooms Dog !!  When he first came to us, it really confused him if I went to the spare room ... he'd stand in the doorway, head tilted on one side, quizzical expression, as if he was saying "what you doing?  You do know you're in the wrong room, right?"  He's used to it now(!)

  • I often wonder if a bigger house would make a difference.. I didn't want to sell at the minute as I bought this house to renovate.. I wanted to live in it a while! But it's an option. Thanks
