I think visually so I benefit from using things like mind maps.
However when it comes to unfamiliar icons - in apps and web pages etc. - I prefer words
...because for me, recognising unfamiliar icons is like recognising unfamiliar faces
i.e. they don't get learnt that easily - only if interacted with frequently
