Does anyone take Sertraline?

Hello everyone.

My Dr has prescribed me Sertraline for my panic attacks and depression as it’s gotten really bad recently.

The only other medication I’ve ever taken is antibiotics, twice in my life.

But, I’ve been on these pills since Wednesday and I can’t sleep, I’m waking up at 4am. I’ve probably eaten one meal since then and had a few snacks, i also can’t help going to the toilet.
my Dr never told me about any of the side effects.

does anyone else take this? He’s given me a months worth to see how I go and take one tablet (50mg)

how were your side effects and how long did they last?

  • Are you aware that antidepressants can cause lifelong shaking and involuntary movements, even when you stop taking them?

  • Hi Mark, like you I was started on 50mg, on a higher dose now but hopefully your not need that and won't be on very long.

These are the side effects I remember having

Like you I had trouble sleeping, had to keep going to the toilet and I also felt sick and had a really bad headaches.

One thing I did which you may want to is I phoned my doctor and said about the side effects and she said to take half a pill for two weeks and that actually did help loads! So it might be worth you talking to her to see what she suggests.

    Take care

  • NOT A PROFESSIONAL

from my own experience this medication was awful, i have been on a lot of different mood stabilisers, Anxiety medication and antidepressants and i personal do not respond typically to them. they either make symptoms worse, I become extremely tolerating to them way to quickly or just don't work as intended.

You maybe an individual with autism & ADHD and this medications (setraline) may not work as intended as your brain is wired different. It has been known to increase anxiety levels in those with ADHD making general day to day functioning more difficult as it increase the out of sync processing that some people with ADHD or Autism may experience.

It can also cause lower tolerance to sensory input or cause difference in sensory perception, if this continues after a month of taking please go and see your general practitioner.

Like most medications you have to take them for a while (1 month) before seeing any benefits.if you experience toilet trouble such as diarrhea you may be on the wrong medication and they making you increasable stressed. They do initially sertraline has an appetite suppression effect but his often disappears after a month or so.

This is going to be a weird question and you may not instantly know, But do you think you have depression and anxiety or something else. What is your gut feeling because general practitioners hand out anti depressants like skittles and its often something more complex like ADHD or Hormone imbalances.

  • I tried that about three years ago.

Within three hours to my utter surprise I'd "followed though", with no prior warning of such troubles and was feeling weird and unpleasant..

I discontinued the experiment. MY daughter used it for ages and said it suited her.

SSRI's do not suit me, on a previous try of Prozac, in 1995 I became "mental" & dangerous within hours, a state that persisted, so I discontinued that drug immediately, again, against the quacks advice, as I preferred to be harmless and miserable rather than "happy" and dangerous to cross.

At least with illegal drugs you actually get told what to expect, and in my experience, they work as advertised.

  • Hi! I’ve been on sertraline for 2 years but I’m also a pharmacy student so I can acurratley say that this is a super common side effect, especially within the first 4-6 weeks. If after 6 weeks you’re still waking up and getting bad sleep, it might be worth talking to your GP again but I’d recommend to keep taking them and let your body get used it it. I spent the first 3 weeks consistently waking up at 3am and it stopped after 2 months

  • Yes, I've been on them.  All such pharma products have side-effects and they aren't the same for everyone.  Mark, you haven't really been on them remotely long enough to judge that.  Give it time.

  • I have been on this in the past for depression. The first pill, I was awake a total of 25 hours! It did get better, and things did settle down. I would say it took about 8 week to even out, and by about 11 weeks I felt them working. I would recommend eating small regular snacks. What time do you take them? I had mine at 9.30pm. I always took it with a small glass of water and half a digestive or cracker. That certainly helped any stomach issues.

  • I occasionally have migraines with visual aura. By occasionally, I mean I can go years without one and had never previously had more than two in any one year. By the tenth day of taking Sertraline I had had 5 migraines of increasing severity. I then stopped taking it and had a further 3 migraines, then 2 aura without a subsequent headache, then they stopped. Some people find that Sertraline is really helpful, but I certainly did not.

  • You might want to let them work for 6 weeks.

Sertraline gave me a vile time in my life. I was on 200mg and was having adrenaline rushes.

I was going to GP, A/E, 111 telling them I’m on xtc somethings not right.. the more I went for help the more they increased it.

I came off Sertraline and all my symptoms went away, my mind was working again. But then I had to start fluoxetine and now I’m just drained.

    this is my opinion/experience

sleep and none stop toilet problems, dental problems from the adrenaline gern..
