Autism and universal credit

Hi, I'm awaiting a diagnosis for my autism as I have been referred so am on the waiting list and I was wondering whether I should inform universal credit/the job centre about this? I'm not sure what they can do or whether it will change how they treat me as they're quite strict, I refuse to apply for jobs that I don't feel are suitable and they say that if I don't then I will be sanctioned but if a job isn't suitable I'm not going to be able to cope with it. I also really struggle with the weekly appointments and they refuse to let me have phone call appointments. If I inform them of my referral will they be abit more understanding and relaxed with me?

  • Yes, if your on universal credit it could mean that with enough evidence you could get a premium or limited capacity element so that your not bullied or harassed into looking for work, it could double your current universal credit. it will also reduce the weekly appointment at the jobcentre, I see them once every six months but i am getting support from my local authities employment team which has recently been set up to help people with autism.

If you inform the job centre they should be able to arrange a meeting with the disability employment advisor which can redirect you to employment schemes and support that can help you apply, search and access work. you do not need a formal diagnoses to access a meeting with your disability employment advisor.

to get the limited limited capacity element you need a doctors letter support it while waiting for a formal diagnoses. they'll arnage a meeting and you can explain how you potential disability affects you to qualify.
