Digestive system

Hi, I'm a parent of a adult (22 years old).  He has aspergers, he has the reasoning of a 15 year old.  For many months my son has not eaten well,  his diet consists of mini sauges and mini sausage rolls, and slices of party sized sourdough slices and water.  He is having diarrhea on and off, and will not eat until he has been to the toilet, this will involve being in the bathroom for over an hour forcing himself to go, and going back and forth to the toilet multiple times a day.  He will not go out of the house in case he needs the toilet urgently.    I have tried to persuade him to go to the Dr's but he is too afraid to in case of needing the loo.

I appreciate no medical advice can be offered but just wondering if this was common for people with Aspergers

Appreciate any advice please.  I'm extremely worried as he has  lost so much  weight .

Many thanks

  • Ask to see a dietician who has experience and knowledge of Autism. Oatmeal, banana, carrots, blueberries, fish are good to try and avoid too much sugary/ junk foods.

  • I have had the same problems my entire life. After experimenting with diet, I've found that bland, starchy foods are the safest option. White bread, rice, peeled potatoes. I even sometimes mix corn starch into food to boost the calorie content and it seems to slow things down a little, so I only have to go 2-4 times a day rather than the 8-12 when I was just eating whatever.

Loperamide can open up a huge range of possible activities if taken 6-8 hours in advance of when you need it to be working. I've had so many great experiences that simply wouldn't have been possible without it. It also helps to normalise digestion for a few days after taking it, although can cause side effects like fatigue and headaches, and seems to get less effective the more you use it.

    Did you find a solution?

  • Thank you for your reply, a food diary I have been doing.  Not heard of Symprove, I will investigate, thank you.

  • My five year old heads to the toilet almost as soon as we put a meal on table.im autistic too and have a life long difficult with defecation. I think it's anxiety, preference for simply food, comforting texture. Overspill, water passing by solids in the digestive tract, is common for me. Thankfully, it doesn't keep me in.

  • Can you try a home phlebotomist if the GP leaves the forms.

  • I would keep a food diary, and possibly introduce something to help the diarrhoea. Have you heard of Symprove? Kefir might also help, but I think due to his restrictions, he won’t want to try them. You can actually get diarrhoea from being constipated, which a lot of people don’t realise.

The anxiety around the toilet is something I can empathise with, I was the same (but with a number 1). I still have problems now, avoiding certain trips,  needing to know where the toilet is, trying to make myself go etc….

  • Thank you.  My son wouldn't have a problem with the fasting idea, as he would prefer not to eat due to the diarrhea.  However introducing different foods maybe a problem, but I will definitely try this.

    Many thanks

  • Thank you for your reply.  I have suggested this, but my son refuses to talk to strangers, or anyone to be honest.  I will keep going back to it though, as I too think it would be good for him to talk.

    Many thanks

  • Hello thank you for your reply. The Dr actually came to the house, last month, and spoke with my son, but my son still needs to go into the surgery, to have blood taken, he tried but had a massive panic attack and left.

I have thoughtvif constipation but it dosent seem to be.

  • Sounds like gastrointestinal issues. And it could be any number of things from a lack of enzymes or a lack of healthy gut bacteria, to a complete allergy or intolerance - this typically worsens with age. This sounds very serious and if not arrested soon, could create other problems in his organs and general health.

One way to work out what is causing a problem is to fast for 3 days. I had no problem doing this as my digestion issues were terrorising and I was happy to take any regiment to trouble shoot the problem. I had lemon water for 3 days. I knew I could eat carrots and almonds without dietary issues so I had a little of those occasionally. This fasting approach could be undertaken if he's happy to play video games for 3 days to take his mind off how difficult it is. I have an adult son. In certain situations, 3 days of video games in exchange for your sons health is worth it. Then introduce one item like a small piece of plain bread - nothing else. and see what happens.

The second idea would be to look into the FODMAP diet as a way of working ground up to figure out the issue is. While many of us do have problems with grains or nitrates found in meat, or other gastrointestinal issues, I have discovered I cannot digest beans, grains or veg. I've created a small "back up" plan if I need to spend 2 weeks to re-set my system.

At the least I would get a men's daily multi-vitamin. And help him understand this is not normal. He will have to change his regiment. Perhaps you could simply start by buying gluten-free sausages and gluten-free sourdough. Although, I would be careful with any ancient grains added to the sourdough. If he needs a little fibre, try raw fruit.

  • I think you need to get them to see a GOOD psychologist which I hope you can find and get hold of. This is really quite a serious issue.

  • I can remember my Mum saying when my cousins small child had similar stomach issues that it’s possible to have diarrhea when you’re constipated because that’s all that can get through. Will he not even talk to the GP on the phone? Most of them aren’t seeing people in person still
