Rehearsing

Who rehearses conversations all the time - how common is it?  My wife, who does not have ASD, will rehearse if there is a stressful/important meeting coming up (doctors appt for example) and she will go over in her head time and again what she wants to say but she doesn’t do it at any other time.

I, on the other hand, rehearse trivial conversations all the time, especially jokes or funny comments, things that annoy me (I will have a whole rational discussion/argument about something and can get myself very stressed and anxious), stuff I want to say to my wife or a friend etc.  I often rephrase the same sentence multiple times to make it “better”.

what are your experiences?

  • I definetly do the same, even if I had just said hello to somebody or something and read their facial expressions incorrectly I will go over and over it in my head and for me it makes things worse and I automatically sometimes exaggerate everything. Those sorts of things never help me, they just keep me awake at night wandering if I had done something wrong. I think thats why I find friendships so difficult sometimes - because if there is any little argument or misunderstanding it races in circles in my head until I almost need to scream. I think it's pretty common to do that. :]
