My child has just been diagnosed with autism

So yesterday 21/12/21 my 7 year old son had a diagnosis for autism. He's also had a referral for ADHD as paediatrician is concerned he is showing some high traits of ADHD. It was suggested I come on this website to get support etc. What did you do once you found out the diagnosis? What steps did you take next? I haven't told my son he is autistic and possibly ADHD as this will set of worries and his anxiety. I feel like I'm at a loss as i don't know what to do next.

  • Once I were told I’m autistic I began researching the condition and I found it fascinating, I could see just as many unusual gifts as well as unusual difficulties. I accepted my limitations by looking from the social model of disability instead of the medical model. By doing so I’ve been able to emphasise my strengths, turn many traits into assets and not define myself as a deficit model.

An interesting book I’ve read by PhD. Thomas Armstrong, ‘The Power of Neurodiversity Unleashing The Advantages of Your Differently Wired Brain,’ he has one chapter about autism and another about ADHD and the advantages that come with these conditions. In both chapters he shares how to create a suitable environment that people with these conditions can thrive in. Whenever you decide to let him know about his condition, regularly remind him of his strengths and gifts that others don’t have.

”Everyone’s a genius. If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing its stupid.” (Albert Einstein)
