Autism

Hi there

Ive recently just been diagnosed autistic and whilst I am relieved in finally knowing I’m not mad or bad I feel like crap and don’t know where to start in getting to know me. I’m 46 years old and I hope things get easier. For all of you who  have done research any top tips would be greatly appreciated?

Many thanks

  • remember- there's nothing wrong with you. i guess being autistic or ND just means you don't fit into the standard NT way and you're simply different. positives come with being autistic as well as there are hard points. find what it is you find difficult and talk to those around you so they can help accomodate that

  • Hello and welcome to the club.  Being on the Spectrum brings its agony, but it also brings its strengths and joys too.  I wouldn't swap my ND brain for an NT one, for sure.

I really hope that as you get to know yourself, you'll start to feel better.  As for the research, there is so much out there; from you tubers recounting their personal experience - Purple Ella is informative, to research articles, books about autism and bios of autistic people.  If you're looking for some lovely positive stories to cheer you up, Temple Grandin has a lot to say about her mind blowing personal journey to success - she was completely non-verbal until she was 4 and has had more than her fair share of bullying and derision, - and the many, many positives of the autistic mind.  Amazon Prime, if you have it, have made a great movie of her life too.

  • Welcome home!

Hope you meet like-minded people here.
