Struggling

Gosh I have made many mistakes in my life - particularly as a teenager - I hated the whole teenage time and I just can't stop being ashamed of my past mistakes.  I know if I were giving advice to anyone else I'd say forgive yourself and be kind to yourself but they're on a loop in my head tonight.

  • Autistic thought-loops, probably very common but not much talked about.  Autistic people tend to ruminate, thats well known about, thinking about things too much - but what can happen is you start to get obsessed with them, explore them, punishing yourself for mistakes etc., not great.  If you keep doing it your brain develops more connections that make the loops stronger and more frequent (the blood flow in that part of the brain increases, you might feel it, or your heart pumping a bit harder), and you drag in more and more things that keep you locked in.  Its also difficult to stop the loops once they start, usually something happens externally to snap you out of it, a noise or someone talking to you.

Its just a bad habit, and can be broken, you just need to try and keep control of your thoughts - either by using mindfulness to give yourself a break from thoughts, or by distracting yourself from thoughts by doing something and trying to focus on that.

Also, setting up a repeating beep can help snap you out of the loops.  I've just started using the following video which helps.

Try and give yourself a break from the punishing loops, so you can start to spend time accepting and forgiving yourself.
